Spartan Drilling Techniques
Here at Spartan Drilling we use a variety of different drilling techniques, this is dependent on the project that we are hired for. All our technicians are certified and licensed to use all machinery.
Direct Push Machine:
This technology “pushes” tools and sensors into the ground. It does not have the use of the drill to remove or loosen soil to make a path. This machine relies on the static weight of the rig, combined with hydraulic hammering to increase the depth of the hole (depth of hole is dependent on soil type, size of sampler, weight and power of rig). This method forces soil to rearrange beneath the surface and make room for the tool. The direct push machine can be used to make paths through sands, gravel, hard pans, high friction clays, tills, fill material, and surface frost.
Auger:
This is a cost-effective drilling method with high productivity. There are two options with the auger, which are solid stem and hollow stem. Although they both use the same technique by continuously transporting cuttings to the surface while drilling beneath the ground. The major difference between the two is the stem, Solid Stem Augers provide a ‘solid stem’, while the Hollow Stem Auger gives a ‘hollow stem’. They are both great tools, but for installation of well, it is suggested to use a hollow stem. The Hollow Stem Auger can stay in the ground for installation and provide a casing for the surrounding soil.
Air Rotary:
This method is primarily used to drill deep boreholes in rock formations. This drill utilizes air as a circulating medium to keep the drill bit from heating up and also clear the path of the cuttings by bringing it to the surface. Several variations are used for this technique including; direct air rotary cashing hammer, down hole hammer, and under reaming.
Split Spoons:
A unique characteristic this drilling method holds, is that it can be used on most drilling rigs. When a split spoon technique is being used, a drilling rig will first drill down to a certain level. Next, the drilling team with install the split spoon and insert it to the bottom of the hole. The following step occurs by using a drill hammer to drive the split spoon into the soil, then it gets pulled out with the sample inside the tube. This method works best in soft soils, avoid large rocks or cobbles.
